Many estates are now restoring their peatland to help contain carbon. Peatland traps carbon and if left unmanaged peat can become damaged, some North Pennines estates have been restoring their land to help with carbon capture.
To restore damaged peatland heather brash is collected with a mixture of mosses, it will cover all the bare peat which has been damped up with coir rolls, Normally heather seed will be placed on top so the seed has a base to bed into.
At its core, peatland restoration is restoring the habitat to its best possible condition. The goals of every restoration project involve the following areas; habitat, carbon store, soil conservation, and hydrological behaviour.
